A luthier is someone who builds or repairs string  Instruments generally consisting of a neck and a sound box. The word "luthier" comes from the French word luth, which means lute.

Today, luthiers tend to divide into two categories, those who work on picked, plucked or strummed string instruments, and those who work on the bowed instruments. I do not build violins, but I do work on them, including full restorations.

JIM PENSON  has been building and repairing instruments since 1980. He built his first instrument, an F5 model mandolin in 1980 and wished he'd chosed something a bit easier.

He is also a bluegrass musician who teaches and plays in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. www.pensonstringwerks.com
